Error when modifying a delayed capture order

I am gettnig an error when trying to modify a new order. I delete a line item ( currently no stock) and replace with a different item ( plenty of stock in POS CRE). Get this message when trying to update to qty 4." Sorry, we cannot update this item as you are requesting to update 4 items, however there are only 0 available."

Please assist.
